Ukraine: Melania Trump obtains a ceasefire in the town of Oleshky, kyiv and Moscow will observe a truce on Tuesday

The First Lady of the United States Melania Trump affirmed this Friday, October 23, that she had obtained a ceasefire in the Ukrainian town of Oleshky, occupied by Russian forces and which lacks food and medicine.

The chief of the Russian army general staff announced this Friday that his troops would observe a localized truce in Ukraine from Tuesday to allow humanitarian operations in the Ukrainian city.

In a message published on the Russian MAX platform, General Valeri Guerassimov affirmed that his troops will observe this truce “from 4 a.m. (1 a.m. GMT) on October 27, 2026” as part of “the humanitarian operation carried out around” Olechky.

The Ukrainian military said it would also observe a truce in Oleshky from Tuesday. “In order to carry out a humanitarian operation in the town of Olechky, located in the Kherson region and temporarily occupied, Ukraine is establishing a ceasefire in a demarcated area, starting from October 27 at 3 a.m. Kyiv time,” the Ukrainian General Staff said in a statement on Friday.

“Oleshky is a town on the front line”

“Oleshky is a town on the front line, on the verge of disaster (…) It is clear that, without my intervention, it would have been impossible to deliver humanitarian aid to the town,” located near the Dnieper River, which forms the front line between Ukrainian and Russian troops, Melania Trump said in a statement.

“The residents of Olechky have limited access to electricity, live among mined roads and are subject to regular military attacks,” continues the First Lady of the United States, who indicates that without her “it would have been impossible to bring humanitarian aid to the town and evacuate the elderly.”

Supervised evacuations

Civilian officials from both countries, as well as a U.S. official, will visit residents of the Ukrainian city “to assess their assistance needs.” “Residents wishing to evacuate will be provided with coordinated support and transportation to their destination of choice. I think some will want to go to Russia, and others to Ukraine,” said Melania Trump.

The situation in the Ukrainian city was brought to the First Lady’s attention during a private discussion during her “Fostering the Future Together” event in New York during the 81st United Nations General Assembly.

Olechky, located in the southern Kherson region, was taken by Russian troops in 2022, at the start of the invasion. The city was heavily affected by the 2023 destruction of the Kakhovka Dam, which caused severe flooding along the Dnieper. Moscow and kyiv accuse each other of being responsible.

Its population has increased from around 24,000 inhabitants to around 2,000 today. Last Saturday, the pope made a call to Russian President Vladimir Putin to urge him for a ceasefire in the Ukrainian city.
