Nvidia’s announcement of the new DLSS 5 technology should have been a triumph, a milestone that erases the boundary between computer graphics and reality. Instead, they were met with an avalanche of criticism and accusations of destroying the artistic vision. However, an unexpected twist, fueled by a code leak and the modding community, has changed the course of the debate, revealing that behind the controversy lies a technology that really has the power; change everything.
“GPT moment for graphics” or “AI filter”?
Nvidia presented DLSS 5 as the biggest leap in computer graphics since the introduction of “ray tracing” in 2018. Riverč is about an AI model that analyzes every frame of the game in real time and enriches it with photorealistic lighting and materials. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang described it as a “GPT moment for graphics,” but the gaming community didn’t share his enthusiasm. The first demonstrations, especially those from the game Resident Evil: Requiem, caused many reactions. Players have complained that the technology makes the characters unrecognizable, imposes a homogenous “AI look” and destroys the original artistic intent of the developers. Soon the derogatory term “AI slop” spread, describing DLSS 5 as an intrusive filter that turns every game into the same, plastic vision of photorealism. Criticisms focused on the fact that the drastic change in lighting changes the atmosphere and emotion of the scene, affecting what makes the game unique.
Jensen Huang strikes back: “They are completely wrong”
Faced with criticism at the GTC conference, Jensen Huang did not hesitate. When asked by journalists about negative reactions, his answer was direct.
- Well, first of all, they are completely wrong – said Huang.
He went on to explain how critics don’t understand the heart; technology. He claimed that DLSS 5 is not just a post-processing filter, butć “generative control at the level of geometry”. According to him, developers retain full control over how and where AI is applied. They can adjust the intensity, colors and mask parts of the scene to preserve the unique aesthetic of their game. Huang emphasized that the tool is designed to empower artists, not take away their control, giving them the ability to achieve visual quality previously reserved for Hollywood. His message was clear: moć remains in the hands of the creator.
Unexpected twist: Moders discovered real potential
While the debate raged, the story took an unexpected twist. A 158MB key file called “DLSSNR.dll” has been leaked online from an early version of NBA 2K27. The skilled modding community, gathered around the RenoDX group, quickly managed to implement an experimental version of DLSS 5 technology in other games, most notably in the acclaimed action title Control. The videos flooded social networks, and the tone of the discussion began to change dramatically. Although the accidental version caused a significant drop in performance – in some cases up to 60 percent – the visual results left many breathless. Where Nvidia’s official demos were criticized as too aggressive, the implementation in Control showed a more subtle but impressive side of the technology. “The difference in the tone of the reaction is amazing compared to the first footage,” one user noted on Reddit. Many admitted that they were too quick to condemn the technology based on poor demonstrations, realizing that the real potential lay in flexibility.
The future has arrived, but at a high price
Although the leak changed public perception, it also revealed another side of the coin. DLSS 5 is, at least in the initial phase, extremely hardware demanding and exclusive to the new generation of Nvidia’s RTX 5000 graphics cards. The huge drop in frames per second (FPS) means that gamers will need the most powerful hardware to exploit their full potential, which raises the question of whether this will become an elite-only feature. However, the support of the world’s largest publishers, including Bethesda, Capcom and Ubisoft, signals that the industry is ready to embrace the technology. Games like Starfield, Assassin’s Creed Shadows and the new Resident Evil već were announced with support for DLSS 5. Bethesda’s Todd Howard said he was amazed to see the technology at work in Starfield, saying it was “amazing how it brought the game to life”.
