Test match debacle in Enschede: “I can’t accept it”: Werder coach angry after 0:7

A 7-0 debacle in the friendly against Dutch first division club FC Twente Enschede has left Werder Bremen in a tight spot. Coach Daniel Thioune canceled his team’s Saturday off before they returned to Bremen and criticized his team’s performance very clearly.

“I had to sort myself out for a moment before I dismantled a complete cabin,” said Thioune. “I have absolutely no understanding or acceptance of the performance. I can’t accept something like that, especially when it comes to attitude. That was nothing today, in all areas.”

Bremen actually started the new Bundesliga season surprisingly positively with seven points in four games. Despite the absence of six national players and the absence of five injured professionals, there were still several regular players on the pitch in Enschede such as Arthur, Amos Pieper, Youri Regeer and Niclas Füllkrug.

Agu comeback for 40 minutes

“We had eleven players in the starting line-up in the first half who had the ambition to play in the Bundesliga, but didn’t back that up in any way,” said Thioune. Werder’s sports director Peter Niemeyer also spoke of a “non-performance” against the club from Enschede, for which he once played for eight years in the youth and professional ranks.

After just a quarter of an hour, Bremen were 3-0 behind in camera, and the hosts even led 6-0 at the break. Felix Agu, who had been injured for a long time, played for around 40 minutes for the first time since the summer preparations, but then had to leave the field again with complaints. In the Bundesliga, Bremen will continue next Friday against league leaders Borussia Dortmund.
