Federal agents search the home of Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar

This Monday, US federal agents searched the home of member of the House of Representatives Ilhan Omar, one of the most prominent figures on the left of the Democratic Party, within the framework of the investigation for a “federal criminal crime.”

A spokesperson for the Department of Justice and sources familiar with the investigation have confirmed the search of the home of the congresswoman from Minnesota, a frequent target of criticism from US President Donald Trump.

A statement from the Department explains that agents from the Department of Homeland Security Investigations “have executed an authorized search warrant obtained by the Department of Justice.” “This action is part of an open federal criminal investigation,” said a Justice Department spokesperson quoted by CNN.

The registration occurs when Omar is in the midst of campaigning for reelection for Minnesota in the midterm elections scheduled for November 3. The Justice Department prohibits prosecutors and investigators from timing an investigation to influence elections.

In addition, the portfolio has restrictions and mandatory permissions to investigate congressmen, protected at a constitutional level in terms of their documentation and communications linked to their parliamentary work.

Senior Trump Administration officials have previously revealed that an investigation was underway against Omar. Trump’s own ‘border czar’, Tom Homan, said last Friday that the investigation against Omar “is moving forward.” “But I can’t give you anything concrete about what’s happening,” he explained.

Homan confirmed early this Monday on the Fox network that a search has been carried out at Omar’s house, but has not given more details about it.

Omar was born in Somalia and came to the United States as a teenager fleeing the war in the African country. She obtained American nationality and in 2018 she was elected to the House of Representatives. He is part of the “Squad” of congressmen on the left of the Democratic Party along with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ayanna Pressley and Rashida Tlaib.

Trump has called her racist names, last year calling her “trash” and saying that Somalis should “go back to where they came from.”
