French prosecutors are investigating the shooting near Paris as a terrorist attack, killing one person

According to police, the suspect was detained near the town of Trapp. The motives for his actions have not yet been established.

The mayor of Trapp, Ali Rabe, told BFMTV that the man fired from a car and “appeared to be shooting indiscriminately and seemed to be intending to cause a massacre.” “It’s a miracle that there weren’t more victims,” the mayor added. He also said that the suspect opened fire in several places, including near the playground.

The attack comes as France prepares for new protests planned for Saturday over the high cost of living and the state of school education. The government is significantly beefing up security measures to try to prevent a repeat of the riots and violence that rocked the country last week.

About 70,000 security forces will be deployed to maintain order. Major museums, including the Louvre, will be closed.
