Ten dead and at least 9 seriously injured. Shocking shooting in the center of Prague, in the building of the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy of the Charles University in Palach Square, in the heart of the capital. The incident required the rapid intervention of the Police who were the first, via X, to break the news, asking residents to stay at home and keep away from the neighborhood.
The intervention to secure and block the attacker, presumably a man armed with a rifle on the roof of a building in the university district, is still underway. However, the police have already announced that they have suppressed the alleged attacker.
According to initial reports, the police had confirmed the presence of numerous victims and dozens of injured at the scene of the shooting but the numbers have not yet been officially confirmed. Meanwhile, the police have cordoned off Jan Palach square and the surrounding areas, redirecting traffic away from the affected area.
Officers are searching the area to make sure there are no other attackers, Mayor Bohuslav Svoboda told Czech television. “We have many injured, the spectrum is very broad, from light injuries to more serious ones, and unfortunately also some deaths. We don’t have a precise number yet,” said Jana Postova, spokeswoman for the Prague rescue workers.
