French destroyer rescues crew of tanker stricken by Houthis in Red Sea

A French destroyer, part of the EU mission to protect maritime traffic in the Red Sea, rescued the crew of the Greek-flagged tanker Sounion, which was attacked by Houthis. 29 people were taken on board. An unmanned boat was also reportedly destroyed.

During the attack, the tanker was shot at with gunfire and then, presumably, attacked by drones. A fire broke out on board, forcing the crew to abandon ship.

The Sounion was reportedly anchored and is no longer drifting. It is unclear whether the fire was extinguished. The name of the destroyer has not been disclosed. The crew includes Russian sailors.
