Finland quits Russian gas with a multibillion-euro investment, as seen by the Exemplar ship entering the Baltic Sea

Finland has a long-term contract with Excelerate Energy in the United States for an LNG terminal ship.

Finland plans to spend heavily in an LNG terminal vessel to replace Russian natural gas.

Gasgrid, a state-owned gas transmission utility, and Excelerate Energy in the United States have been chartering the LNG terminal vessel Exemplar for ten years. Lng stands for liquefied natural gas, which can be delivered large distances by tankers.

Under the 10-year lease, Gasgrid forecasts that the overall cost of the terminal vessel project will be around EUR 460 million. There are other fees linked with the amount of use.

What exactly is Exemplar, the new foundation for Finland’s energy security?

A floating long terminal ship is one that is moored at a port facility. The liquefied natural gas is re-vaporized on board the ship and then transferred to the existing gas network via a connecting pipeline in the port facilities once the ship is anchored.

The LNG terminal ship Exemplar is 291 meters long and 43 meters broad when it arrives in Finland, according to Gasgrid. The cruise ship Silja Symphony, for example, is 203 meters long and 32 meters broad.

The vessel has a capacity of 151,000 cubic meters, which is roughly 60 Olympic-size swimming pools. When completely loaded, the terminal ship can contain roughly 68 thousand tons of lng, or about 1,050 gigawatt hours of energy.

The ship can evaporate 140 gigawatt hours of water every day. The annual steaming capacity is more than 40 terawatt hours.

Olli Sipilän, CEO of Gasgrid Gas demand in Finland has been around 40 gigawatt hours per day in recent weeks. Finland’s annual natural gas demand is around 25 terawatt hours, with industry accounting for just over 14 terawatt hours.

When the terminal vessel is ready, it will begin delivering lng from the international market in separate tankers. It takes about a day to unload a tanker.

Australia, the United States, Malaysia, Algeria, Norway, and Qatar are all prospective LNG producers, according to Gasgrid.

The terminal ship’s final destination is in southern Finland. This item’s exact location on the ship has yet to be determined.

In addition to Finland, new port infrastructure appropriate for Exemplar will be erected on the Estonian coast. If Estonian construction is done first, the terminal ship will be stationed there while the Finnish port infrastructure are being built.

According to Gasgrid, Finnish port constructions will be finished by the end of the year at the earliest, assuming no delays in the permitting or construction processes. The availability and timing of Estonian port facilities will be examined.

The terminal ship would like to be ready by next winter. Commissioning could take place in the fourth quarter of 2023, according to Gasgrid’s plans.

Annika Saarikon is the Minister of Finance. According to (Central), the terminal vessel’s operator, Excelerate Energy, has stated that the project’s timeline target is demanding. However, Saarikko claims that the corporation is devoted to it.
