Why the OMV wants to invest a total of 3.6 billion euros this year

The listed Viennese mineral oil, energy and gas company OMV has had a mixed financial year 2024. Sales have dropped by 14 percent to around 34 billion euros, the operating result by 15 percent to 5.14 billion euros. “We managed profitably in a difficult environment. We have achieved the fourth best result in the history of the OMV, ”says Group boss Alfred Stern. Above all, the falling energy and raw material prices and inflation influenced the business.

This year the OMV has a lot plans. It will invest vigorously: a total of 3.6 billion euros, of which two billion euros are paid to the area of ​​energy, 900 million euros to the chemistry sector and 700 million euros on the fuel division. “We make our company fit for the future,” says Stern. “We expect an average Brent oil price of $ 75 per barrel for 2025.”

In the wholesale of Gas, Stern expects an average price of 40 to 45 euros per megawatt hour. In the previous year, the major gas trading price had dropped by 16 percent to 35 euros per megawatt hour. On Tuesday, the price was just under 55 euros.

Norway and Wittau

In the area of ​​gas, the business with the Russian Gazprom is already history. OMV has turned its back on Russia because of the contract broken. Finally, she was able to enforce claims for damages of 230 million euros against Gazprom.

“For the OMV, the focus is on the security of supply of our customers,” says Stern. “Today we are more well there with our successfully diversified gas portfolio than ever before. We access our own gas production in Norway and Austria as well as gas quantities of third -party producers in Norway. ”

In addition, OMV has agreed to deliver liquefied gas (LNG) with partners. In Norway, a deep sea bore was developed with partners. The OMV is also active in Wittau in Lower Austria. “The biggest gas find in Austria has been done there for 40 years,” explains Stern. “We want to fully use the potential of this field.” And the Romanian daughter Omv Petrom develops the natural gas project “Neptun Deep” in the Black Sea with a partner. “Neptun Deep will make Romania the largest natural gas producer in the EU in 2027,” says the OMV boss. “We assume that Europe will remain a net importer of gas by 2050. As long as we will use gas as a bridge technology. ”

SAF and e-charging stations

At the same time, Stern expects that 2030 the Cashflows of the OMV come from renewable energy projects. To this end, the group invests in geothermal energy, i.e. the use of geothermal energy. The OMV also expects that the demand for sustainable fuels such as the air fuel SAF will triple by 2030. “The OMV has been producing in the Raffinerie Schwechat Saf from used dining oils since 2022 and we supply large airlines like Ryanair,” says the CEO. “The establishment of a European electromobility network with up to 5,000 emotion charging stations by 2030 rounds off our offer.”
