Maximum influx to El Insurgente has been 68 thousand people in one day

Two months after entering into full operation, the El Insurgente Train has reached a maximum influx of 68,149 people in a single day, reported the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT).

In a statement, he reported that El Insurgente, inaugurated on February 2, 2026, has become an important transportation system that connects Mexico City with Toluca.

The agency detailed that the service provides connection with line 1 of the Metro Collective Transportation System (STC), with line 3 of the Cablebús, with the Passenger Transportation Network, with the Cetram Observatory and with the Poniente bus terminal.

“At its maximum demand, it will transport up to 140 thousand passengers a day,” the SICT estimated.

The Insurgente is made up of 16 trains, covers five stations and two terminals. Each train has departure intervals of between 10 and 12 minutes, and the route from Observatorio to Zinacantepec takes 60 minutes.

In turn, the agency specified that the stations it covers are: Zinacantepec (terminal), Toluca Centro, Metepec, Lerma, Santa Fe, Vasco de Quiroga and Observatorio (terminal).

“Each train has a length of 100 meters and provides service to 719 passengers; they have universal accessibility and 326 ergonomic seats, as well as two spaces for wheelchairs.”

In addition, the means of transport has a railway traffic control system that allows reducing the intervals between trains, monitoring in real time and offering security.

More passenger train lines planned

The Sectoral Program for Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation 2025-2030 of the Mexican government provides for the construction of more than 3 thousand kilometers of new passenger train lines.

The new rail routes will connect Mexico City with Pachuca, Hidalgo; Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, and Nogales, in Sonora, which will be integrated into emblematic projects such as the Mayan Train, the Interoceanic Train of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec and El Insurgente.

Likewise, the sectoral program established the promotion of freight transportation by rail, through supervision, regulation, verification of the conservation and maintenance of the existing infrastructure.

The intention is to promote productive connectivity and reduce companies’ logistics costs.
