ID Austria extension: Police warn of fraudulent SMS

More than 300,000 certificates of the ID Austria digital identity card will expire in the coming months and must be renewed. Users are currently being informed by email or via the app that their certificates need to be renewed.

In the SMS with the subject “LAST REMINDER” the recipient is informed that the registration for ID Austria will expire the following day and asked to follow a link that leads to a phishing page. The police strongly warn against following this link.

Once the personal data has been entered, those affected would be contacted by telephone by the unknown perpetrators, press spokesman Fabian Marchetti is quoted as saying. “During the course of the conversation, an attempt is made to persuade the victims to install remote access software.”

Damage in the five-figure range

Once the perpetrators have gained access, they are able to access the victim’s bank account without authorization and carry out transactions. In one of the three cases, the experiment failed, says Marchetti. However, in two cases there was damage in the five-figure range.
