Megiddo Airfield Reconstruction Plan Approved

The Israel Land Authority has approved a plan for the reconstruction and modernization of the Megiddo airfield, which serves helicopters and small aircraft.

The NIS 90 million project will be carried out by the Economic Company for the Development of the Jezreel Valley.

The airfield was established in 1941 by the British Army for the needs of the Royal Air Force during the Mandate period. After the creation of the state, it came under the jurisdiction of the IDF and remained under the control of the Ministry of Defense.

In 2006, an agreement was signed between the Land Administration, the Ministry of Defense, local authorities and the economic company on the transfer of about 400 dunams for civilian use. However, until now the status of a civilian airfield has not been officially regulated, although it is used by agricultural aviation companies, a fire squadron, a flight school and a gliding club.

The 2,400 meter long runway is in poor physical condition. There is no fencing on the territory, civic activities are not regulated, and commercial plots are not being sold.

As part of the project, it is planned to reconstruct and modernize the runway according to the standards of the Civil Aviation Authority and the IDF, laying roads and infrastructure, water supply and sewerage systems, drainage canals towards the Kishon River, electrical networks and LED lighting. The land authority will offer 25 commercial sites for light aircraft, helicopters and hangars for sale.

Completion of the project is scheduled for the end of 2028.
