Fuel prices: the government will extend support measures in May, announcements from the Prime Minister expected this Tuesday

The government will continue to help those most affected. Support measures in the face of rising fuel prices will be extended into May, Minister of the Economy Roland Lescure indicated this Tuesday morning on RTL. “We had support measures in April, we will continue that in May,” he declared, while the extension of the ceasefire between Iran and the United States beyond this Wednesday evening is more than uncertain. Announcements are expected this Tuesday evening around 6 p.m.

The government has already announced 130 million euros in support spending in the face of the crisis: 70 million to help transporters, fishermen and farmers, and 60 million to strengthen the energy check. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu indicated on Friday that a “next aid package” would be announced in May for the most affected sectors.

“Other sectors” could be helped

Will the measures in May be the same as in April? Roland Lescure did not answer this question clearly, but “other sectors” could be helped such as “big rollers”.

A meeting on energy must be held at the end of the afternoon around Sébastien Lecornu, who will make more precise announcements on this subject “immediately”, according to the Minister of the Economy. “The Prime Minister has committed to working on support measures for the month of May,” he added.

Regarding the impact of the current crisis on French growth, the latter should be revised by 0.1 point, bringing it to 0.9%. Roland Lescure estimated the overall impact on the French economy at between four and six billion euros. “This is the order of magnitude at this stage of the cost of the crisis as we can estimate it” with in particular an impact of 3.6 billion euros on the cost of the debt “which is increasing because interest rates have risen,” he said.

For the tenant of Bercy, “2026, when we look at it with hindsight, will be the year when France took the turn towards all electric”. “We must take advantage of this crisis to fundamentally change France and electrify it,” he said. On this subject, he notably announced the multiplication of “charging stations” for electric vehicles in condominiums. “Today, we have a little more than 100,000 terminals which represent a little more than 400,000 parking spaces, we will increase to 1.7 million” by 2035, he continued.
