Greece’s island crisis: The consequences of record visitor numbers

Last year, Greece recorded record numbers of tourists: According to the Greek Central Bank, almost 38 million tourists came to Greece in 2025 – that is almost three and a half times the Greek population.

Infrastructure of many islands at its limit

The study’s researchers now warn that not only the well-known holiday islands, but also numerous smaller islands can hardly keep up with the burden. Especially in the summer months, water consumption, electricity requirements, waste generation and traffic problems increase dramatically. At the same time, living space for locals is becoming increasingly scarce as more and more apartments are being rented out as holiday accommodation.

The study concludes that although tourism is an important economic factor, it does not automatically lead to balanced development. The scientists are therefore calling for an expansion of the infrastructure, stricter spatial planning and more sustainable tourism management.

The problem is known to the Ministry of Tourism in Athens. The Greek government had already announced at the beginning of May that it would take more decisive action against the consequences of mass tourism. Stricter building requirements are planned for tourist hotspots such as Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodes and Kos. New hotels on particularly polluted islands should be smaller in the future.
