Visa has integrated the payment network into ChatGPT for purchases on behalf of the user

As part of the partnership, AI agents will be able to not only select products based on user requests, but also purchase them from any seller that accepts Visa cards. Previously, such solutions only worked with a limited number of stores and trading platforms. The technological basis will be provided by OpenAI: ChatGPT will be able to interact with users, make decisions within given parameters and initiate purchases. Visa, in turn, will be responsible for processing payments, monitoring security and detecting fraudulent transactions.

To use the feature, cardholders will be able to link Visa to ChatGPT. There will be a variety of protections in place, including spending limits, required transaction confirmations, and the ability to limit the number of approved merchants. Visa intends to consider disputes regarding such purchases according to the same rules as regular transactions, checking the customer’s intention to make a purchase and the correctness of the seller’s actions.

OpenAI previously attempted to enter the e-commerce market through its Instant Checkout feature, but the service was not widely adopted and was closed in March. The parties did not disclose the financial terms of the agreement between Visa and OpenAI. It is also not yet known whether additional fees will be charged to sellers or buyers.
