“Feminized and aged”: how the Buenos Aires population changed in the City according to an official report

The population structure of the City of Buenos Aires, where just over 3 million inhabitants reside, shows a composition “feminized and aged” and with a strong increase in single-person households, according to the Buenos Aires Institute of Statistics and Censuses.

“Populations register changes in their composition by sex and age as a consequence of the Previous trends in fertility, mortality and migratory behaviorphenomena that directly affect the population structure and that have repercussions on the structure of employment, the levels and distribution of income and the needs of the population in fields such as health, education, housing and provision of services in general,” says the official Report.

This is how The masculinity index is 89.4 men for every 100 womena gap that deepens in the population over 70 years of age (60.6 men for every 100 women). This disparity responds to the longer life expectancy of women.

By place of residence within the City there are contrasts in the composition by age and sex. The Northern Zone registers the highest levels of aging and feminization. and the South Zone has a higher proportion of girls/boys and a higher masculinity index (92.7 compared to 82.9 in the North).

The predominant type of home in the City continues to be the family one. However, it stands out the growth of single-person households, which represent 39.7% of the total. But while in the North Zone almost half of the households are single-person (48.7%), in the South Zone there is a greater concentration of family households with a greater number of members.

In the last 20 years, the expansion of single-person households stands out. It rose from 26.9% in 2005 to 32% in 2013 and 39.7% in 2025. However, overall, the majority of households in the City are family (59.5%).

According to the place of birth, it shows that 63.4% were born in CABA. The rest: 12% in the Province of Buenos Aires, 10.4% in Other Provinces, 6.3% in neighboring countries. 7.6% in other non-neighboring countries. The South Zone is the one with the highest proportion of people born in the City (69.4%).

The structure of households in the City varies according to geographical location. While the North Zone presents the highest proportion of non-family and smaller households (1.9 people on average), the South Zone is characterized by a greater presence of family units (68.5%) with an average of 2.6 people. For its part, the Central Zone registers an intermediate situation and similar to the total.
