China is about to supply Iran with about 400 shoulder-fired missiles for air defense, with the first shipment expected to be made within weeks. This is reported by the Reuters news agency, from three sources. The transaction in the amount of approximately 60-70 million dollars is one of the central ones in the Islamic Republic’s attempts to improve its short-term defense capabilities, after the intense attacks it has suffered in recent months.
This will be done with the help of about 300-400 Chinese models QW-12 and FN-16. The first system is the upgraded version of the QW series, which, like the FN-16, is a MANPADS (Man Portable Air Defense Systems), i.e. an air defense system operated by a person, or shoulder missiles in the more familiar language. QW-12 is infrared guided, and its main improvements compared to the previous model, QW-2, deal with target targeting and safer launching. From Chinese publications it is evident that the same system can respond against aircraft, cruise missiles, or 122 mm rockets.
The contract for these shoulder missiles was made by the Ayatollahs’ regime with the “Zhongqing Baushang” company, which is located in Hong Kong. This is according to the Reuters report. “The relevant reports are baseless,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry denied, while their counterparts in Tehran chose not to comment. “China consistently chooses to play a role in promoting peace and ending conflict.”
More immune to electronic warfare jamming
At the field level, these are far from the first Chinese systems that Iran will receive. FN-16 is also intended for short ranges, and is considered an upgraded version of the FN-6 series. Similar to the second system that Iran is expected to receive, the FN-16 is more immune to electronic warfare jamming or the release of bullets from aircraft for defensive purposes. Its main uses are helicopters, fixed-wing and unmanned aerial vehicles that operate at relatively low altitudes.
In conclusion, Iran already operates more strategic Chinese air defense systems. So, for example, there is the “Shen Nong” laser system, which is designed to blind unmanned aircraft or even intercept them in certain situations. The system can be deployed on the basis of an operating container or on 4×4 vehicles. The “Shen Nong” radar is able to detect threats at a distance of 5 km, when its laser has a power of 10-20 kilowatts. As part of its activation, it is possible to blind drones at a distance of 3 km, or intercept them at a range of 1.5 km. The laser can be activated for 200 seconds, after which the system requires five minutes (300 seconds) to recharge.
