La Jornada: Mexico, the world’s main egg consumer per person

Mexico occupies first place in the world in egg consumption per person, according to figures from the National Poultry Farmers Union (UNA), an organization that brings together producers of the sector in the country. Each Mexican consumes an average of 410 pieces per year, which is equivalent to 24.1 kilograms.

To supply this demand, national production is around 2.77 million tons per year, making the country the fourth largest egg producer on a global scale and responsible for one in every 27 units produced on the planet.

At a conference, Ezequiel Casillas Padilla, UNA Egg Vice President, and Teresa Rull Reveles, presented the national campaign The Power of the Mexican Egg, which seeks to position the food as a strategic protein and recognize the work of poultry farming.

The initiative will last 10 years and will be deployed in three stages, ranging from positioning the egg as a strategic protein to delving into its benefits and, finally, its incorporation into eating habits. It will have a presence on social networks and external media, with the participation of the National Poultry Institute.

Casillas Padilla pointed out that the poultry industry generates 250 thousand direct jobs and 800 thousand indirectly. Behind each egg, he said, there is a chain of work and production that supports thousands of families in the country.
