The Interior Ministry has demanded that the Bnei Brak municipality take measures within weeks to reduce the deficit and return to a balanced budget.
The letter sent to the mayor’s office said the city ended 2025 with a deficit of about 80 million shekels, and as of the first quarter of 2026, there remains a current budget deficit of about 49 million shekels.
Based on these data, the Ministry of Internal Affairs demands that the municipal leadership, by October 11, adopt and agree on “mandatory and painful decisions” that will allow reaching a balanced budget.
Also, pending a new order, the municipality’s applications for approval of individual employment contracts and salary increases are frozen, and in the area of the development budget only those projects that are deemed vitally necessary will be approved.
The turnaround plan should include specific measures in the areas of procurement, tenders and personnel that will achieve a balanced budget by the end of the year.
