La Jornada: The weight of salaries in GDP rises to 30.8%: Inegi

In the first quarter, salaries represented 30.8 percent of the Mexican economy, an advance of 4.1 percentage points compared to 2018, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) reported yesterday.

According to the Quarterly Institutional Sector Accounts (CSIT), in January-March the remuneration of employees showed an advance of 1.7 percentage points compared to the same period in 2025, when salaries represented 29.1 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP).

According to INEGI, in the recent eight years the share of salaries has gone from 26.7 percent of GDP in the first quarter of 2018 to 30.8 percent in the same period of this year.

In contrast, business profits in the country were equivalent to 39.4 percent of the Mexican economy in the reference period, a decrease of 1.7 points compared to January-March 2025. However, compared to the first quarter of 2018, when profits amounted to 46.7 of GDP, a contraction of 7.3 percentage points is observed.

The above shows that the distribution of wealth has changed significantly in the last eight years, for the benefit of the population that receives remuneration.

In the first quarter, Mexico’s GDP was 35.5 billion current pesos. Of this amount, 10.9 billion correspond to the remuneration of employees and 14 billion pesos to business profits.

On the other hand, according to Inegi, households generated 35 percent of GDP in the first quarter of 2026, an advance of 0.6 percentage points compared to the same period last year.

Companies contributed 43.5 percent of the country’s GDP, a contraction of 1.5 points compared to January-March 2025.

Financial companies concentrated 5.2 percent of the Mexican economy, an increase of 0.1 percentage points compared to the first quarter of the previous year.

Meanwhile, the federal government contributed 8.2 percent of the product in January-March 2026, an increase of 0.6 percentage points compared to the same period a year ago.

For their part, non-profit institutions serving households represented 0.8 percent of the Mexican economy in the reference period, unchanged compared to the first quarter of 2025.
