La Jornada: Lula will defend the Brazilian Pix payment system before Trump

Sao Paulo., The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, announced that he will defend before his American counterpart, Donald Trump, the payment system of the Brazilian Central Bank Pix, which Washington uses as an argument to place tariffs against the South American country.

At a political event in Sao José do Rio Preto, in the southern state of Sao Paulo, Lula da Silva said that he will defend the Pix payment mechanism during an eventual meeting in September with Trump within the framework of the UN General Assembly in New York.

“I’m going to meet Trump at the UN and tell him to make a Pix and see how good it is,” he said.

Pix was created by the Central Bank of Brazil in November 2020 and allows payments and transfers to be made 24 hours a day, every day of the week, and has become one of the main payment methods in the country.

Lula da Silva’s statement occurred in the midst of the trade dispute between Brazil and the United States, which includes additional tariffs of up to 25 percent for certain Brazilian products and questions about the South American country’s digital payment system.

Brasilia rejected the measures and maintained that trade differences must be resolved through dialogue and negotiation, without interference in the country’s internal affairs.
