Iceye made a major move – This will change Europe’s space power

Finnish satellite company Iceye and French Arianespace have concluded a memorandum of understanding for cooperation, the aim of which is to strengthen Europe’s access to space.

The companies announced in Paris that they had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on the matter. Based on that, the companies will determine the launch of Iceye’s satellites with the European Ariane 6 launch vehicle in the coming years. Possible cooperation would particularly concern satellite projects intended for use by European states and authorities.

The agreement is related to broader efforts to strengthen Europe’s space self-sufficiency at a time when the strategic importance of space infrastructure has grown, and there is a great power competition for dominance of space, especially between China and the United States.

Iceye is known for its Earth observation satellites, the data produced by which is used in defense, security and environmental monitoring, among other things.

Iceye is currently rapidly increasing its production capacity. The company plans to manufacture around 50 satellites this year, which is double the previous number. The goal for 2027 is to increase production to 100 satellites per year.

According to the company, growth also increases the need to ensure sufficient launch capacity through several different service providers.

Europe’s strongest rocket

Ariane 6 is a new generation heavy launch vehicle developed by the European Space Agency and operated by Arianespace. Its purpose is to secure Europe’s independent access to space for both institutional and commercial actors. According to the companies, the rocket has completed nine successful flights so far, four of them during the current year.

CEO and founder of Iceye Rafał Modrzewski possible future cooperation with Ariane would support the company’s growing needs.

“This MoU gives us the opportunity to explore Ariane 6 as a large, highly reliable European launch service provider supporting the implementation of sovereign customer missions,” he says in the companies’ press release.

According to Modrzewski, Iceye is committed to strengthening Europe’s sovereign space infrastructure.

CEO of Arianespace David Cavaillolès also considers Iceye cooperation a natural part of strengthening the European space sector.

“We are delighted to partner with Iceye, an innovative and fast-growing European company. This partnership reflects our commitment to maintaining sovereign access to space and supporting critical capabilities such as Earth observation,” Cavaillolès said in a statement.

According to him, the agreement strengthens Arianespace’s commitment to support European governments and institutions and to promote a strong and autonomous European space sector.

So far, Iceye has delivered an independent satellite constellation to seven European countries. According to the company, its systems are available without technologies subject to US ITAR export restrictions, which has become an increasingly important factor in European defense and security projects in recent years.

No binding decisions have yet been made regarding the possible Ariane 6 cooperation, but the purpose of the letter of intent is to determine the use of launch services in the coming years. If realized, the cooperation would strengthen both Iceye’s growth plans and Europe’s efforts to build its own, strategically independent space ecosystem.
