Amazon closes aviation hub in Leipzig, 400 jobs at risk

The American online shopping giant Amazon will close its aviation hub at the German airport of Leipzig/Halle. A spokesperson announced this on Tuesday. The closure will impact 400 jobs.

Affected employees will be given the opportunity to request a transfer to another Amazon workplace.

Amazon also has a distribution center at the airport. The group emphasized that it will continue to be active at the airport in the future. The closure is explained by an “adjustment to the logistics network”.

The aviation hub opened in 2020 to enable faster deliveries. However, during the corona pandemic, the logistics network was also expanded in Southern Europe, meaning that flight connections from Leipzig are no longer necessary. It is still unclear when the hub will close its doors.
