Underground hydrogen storage facilities are being planned for Finland – large-scale storage is coming

The storages would balance the supply and demand of green hydrogen.

In Finland, the construction of underground hydrogen storage facilities is being investigated.

The planned hydrogen industry will need underground hydrogen storage in the future to balance the supply and demand of green, i.e., hydrogen produced with renewable energy.

The research project is initiated by VTT, Geological Research Center GTK and industrial organizations. The project has been named Hug (Hydrogen Underground).

According to VTT’s press release, storing hydrogen above ground like traditional natural gas is impossible for cost and safety reasons.

It is now estimated that underground storage is the cheapest and safest option for large-scale storage.

There are no natural land formations suitable for gas storage in Finland, so the Hug project focuses on researching built gas storages.

The project is co-financed by Business Finland, and it is part of Neste and Valmet’s Veturi ecosystems.
