Kristalina Georgieva remains head of the International Monetary Fund

The Bulgarian Kristalina Georgieva will the International Monetary Fund (IMF) continue to lead in the future.

The fund in the US capital Washington confirmed the second term of office of its executive director. “I am honored to lead the IMF for a second five-year term as Managing Director,” said the 70-year-old. She has been at the helm of the organization since 2019. The current term of office ends after five years in the fall.

Georgieva was the only candidate in the selection process. Traditionally, Europeans hold the top job at the IMF, while Americans head the World Bank. Georgieva is the second woman to head the IMF after her predecessor Christine Lagarde – now ECB President. The EU had supported a second term in office for Georgia.

Georgieva previously worked for the World Bank and was an EU commissioner. The energetic woman with a short haircut was responsible for humanitarian aid in Brussels from 2010 to 2014, then as the powerful Vice President of the Commission for Budget and Personnel.

The IMF was founded together with the World Bank at the end of the Second World War. As a global body, it is supposed to ensure that no major currency turbulences arise and lead to political imponderables.
