Israel | Ben-Gvir secured funds for the creation of 936 new prison places

National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir secured funds for his department to build 936 new prison beds. The program is designed for three years, its funding will amount to 536 million shekels. The Marker writes about this.

Treasury officials demanded that the funds come from Ben-Gvir’s department budget. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich made a proposal about two weeks ago to sequester the budgets of all ministries, which caused outrage among many cabinet members.

As a result, after intensive negotiations, a compromise decision was made. The sequester will be used to finance half of the program, the other half will come from the Defense Department budget.

The Department of Homeland Security will have to pay for 225 new jobs in the Bureau of Prisons from its own budget.
