The tax industry holds banking data of more than 120 million individuals

The tax agency holds data on more than 121 million personal accounts and 9 million organizational accounts at 96 commercial banks.

This information was announced by a representative of the General Department of Taxation at a press conference on the afternoon of April 25. This data collection was carried out by this agency following the Prime Minister’s request last year to connect and share data between ministries and branches to prevent tax loss.

According to the General Department of Taxation, agencies such as the police and banks have initially completed data sharing, connecting with the tax industry electronically and supporting e-commerce channel management.

Currently, the tax agency holds data on more than 9 million organizational accounts and 121 million individual accounts at 96 commercial banks.

In fact, an individual or organization can open many accounts at different banks for convenience in transactions. According to State Bank data, by the end of 2023, Vietnam has nearly 183 million individual payment accounts. Thus, the amount of personal data the tax industry is holding accounts for nearly two-thirds of the total personal payment accounts at banks at the end of last year.

Providing bank account data to tax authorities is carried out in accordance with Decree 126/2020 and the Law on Tax Administration 2019. Accordingly, information such as account transactions, balances, and transaction data are Provided by the bank at the request of the head of the tax authority. This is to pay and check the tax obligations payable. Tax authorities are responsible for securely exploiting and storing the payer’s account information.

From data provided by the bank, the tax authority will filter out a list of people doing online business but have not yet declared and paid taxes. Recently, many online sellers have been charged a large amount of money, from a few dozen to hundreds of millions of dong.

In addition to bank account data, the tax industry also holds information on 929 websites providing e-commerce services and 130 organizations in the fields of telecommunications, advertising, and broadcasting.

According to Deputy Director General of the General Department of Taxation Mai Son, the tax industry faces significant challenges in management and collection when e-commerce develops strongly. Recently, this agency has had many solutions to increase tax management in this field.

In 2023, tax management revenue through e-commerce channels is 3.5 million billion VND (about 146 billion USD), with paid taxes of 97,000 billion, an increase of 14% compared to a year earlier.
