5 thousand patents registered in the UAE

The total number of patents registered in the UAE exceeded 5,000, while 3,415 patent applications were registered in 2023, an increase of 19.5% over the year 2022, according to the Ministry of Economy. The Ministry stressed that protecting intellectual property represents an important axis and goals of sustainable development that the state seeks to achieve in all sectors, especially the economic sectors.

The country has adopted a forward-looking approach in developing a legislative and regulatory environment to protect intellectual property rights and nurture owners of entrepreneurial ideas and projects, in accordance with best international practices.

  • Integrated system

Abdullah Al Saleh, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Economy, said on the occasion of the celebration of “World Intellectual Property Day”: “The UAE, thanks to the directives of its wise leadership, has succeeded in creating a pioneering legislative environment for intellectual property in accordance with the highest international standards, and consolidating the role of knowledge and creativity in economic growth. 3 laws to regulate and protect industrial property rights, trademarks, copyrights and related rights, in addition to launching an integrated system consisting of 11 initiatives that include all intellectual property applications, in a way that supports the state’s vision of transitioning to an economic model based on knowledge and innovation and encouraging research and development.”

Al Saleh pointed out that these measures contributed to developing a national environment that incubates activities and fields of intellectual property, innovation and patents, as the Ministry of Economy last year alone received 3,415 applications to register a patent, an increase of 19.5% over the year 2022, bringing the total number of patents registered in the country to more than Of 5 thousand patents.

He added: “The Ministry of Economy participates in celebrating World Intellectual Property Day because of the importance and opportunity it represents to raise awareness of the role that intellectual property plays in supporting and sustaining the national economy, and in confirmation of the keenness of the UAE and the Ministry of Economy to provide capabilities and opportunities for people with talent and creative ideas, and to transform their ideas into projects.” An entrepreneur that contributes to supporting the business community, promoting sustainability practices in economic activities, and employing innovation and intellectual property to support this trend, in line with the slogan of World Intellectual Property Day for this year, and in a way that contributes to achieving the goals of the “We Are the Emirates 2031” vision, for the country to become a global center for the economy. The new one is based on innovation, creativity and pioneering projects.”

  • Introductory seminars

On the occasion of the celebration of “World Intellectual Property Day,” the Ministry of Economy is organizing, from April 22 to 30, a number of introductory seminars, workshops, and competitions, aiming to raise awareness of national laws and legislation related to intellectual works and procedures for their protection, and the role of protecting intellectual property rights in stimulating innovation. Enhancing the role of patent registration in providing support for the fields of science and technology, and digital transformation towards sustainability in intellectual works.

World Intellectual Property Day, which falls on April 26 of each year, is a global occasion in which all countries of the world, institutions and organizations concerned with intellectual property issues participate. It was established by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in conjunction with the organization’s founding in 1970, to raise awareness of the importance of intellectual property rights. Introducing its various fields, such as trademarks, patents, industrial designs, copyright, and other creative fields and industries.
