The president of the Union of Journalists leaves his position due to conflicts

The new chairman will be elected during the spring, before then the position will be held by council chairman Antti Laakso.

Union of Journalists chairman Hanne Aho will leave his position on Friday, January 10, says the Union of Journalists in its press release.

“There have been conflicts related to management and interaction at the Journalistliitto office. The issues have not been successfully resolved within the framework of the current organization. That’s why it’s time to reform it now”, says Hanne Aho in the press release.

Union of Journalists chairman of the council Antti Laakso tells HS that it is not possible to tell the public about the contradictions mentioned by Aho in more detail, because they are related to the employment relationships of the employees of the Journalists’ Union office.

“There are issues related to office management and cooperation. There haven’t been any conflicts in the board or the council,” says Laakso.

Antti Laakso also takes over the duties of the chairman of the Journalists’ Union, which have been vacated by Aho, until a new chairman is elected.

New with the chairman, the board of Journalists’ Association also wants to reform the association’s organization and develop management.

“The government has already noticed in the past that there are things that should be reformed,” says Antti Laakso.

“Now a work community investigation has been carried out, which has revealed problems and risks related to the current organization. They are now known, but we need to find out more about them. The new chairman, who will be elected during the spring, also needs to get to know the situation in peace.”

Hanne Aho has worked as the chairman of the union since January 2015. The Union of Journalists and Aho have agreed on the termination of the employment relationship together, the press release says. Aho’s third season was underway, and there would have been two more years left. During the spring, the Council of Journalists’ Association will elect a new chairman for the remainder of the term.

The Union of Journalists is an independent trade union whose 14,000 members work in, for example, the media, the publishing industry and communication companies.
