A secret papyrus in the chest of an Egyptian mummy

For over a century it remained silent, almost forgotten among the display cases Archdiocesan Museum of Wroclawin Poland. One find among many, cataloged as the mummy of a child Egyptian of about eight years old, who arrived in Europe in 1914 thanks to the purchase of the cardinal Adolf Bertram. But under those layers of linen that time has made fragile like glass, the little guest of the museum kept a secret that only modern technology has managed to glimpse, but without yet being able to touch.

The turning point came thanks to an ambitious research project launched in 2023 byUniversity of Wroclaw. Under the guidance of the teacher Agata Kubalathe team of experts decided to subject the body to a series of radiological tests e computed tomography high resolution. What emerged from the monitors left the researchers breathless: inside the child’s chest, right above the heart, there is a unknown object which does not belong to the original anatomical structure.

The mummification technique and the anomaly in the chest

The results of the study, recently published in the prestigious journal Digital Applications in Archaeology and Cultural Heritagedescribe a process of mummification executed with extreme care, typical of an intermediate social class of Ptolemaic period. The scans confirmed the removal of the brain transnasally and the use of embalming resins concentrated especially on the face and neck. Yet, everyone’s attention is catalyzed by that small anomaly in his chest. According to the first software calculations, the most suggestive hypothesis is that it could be a papyrus roll.

The experts’ hypotheses on the mysterious object

In that era, it was not uncommon for the deceased to be accompanied by ritual formulasprayers or the person’s name itself, written to protect the soul on the dangerous journey to the afterlife. Other experts intervened in the debate raised by the specialized newspaper Archeonewsthey suggest instead that it may be a amuleta magical object strategically placed by embalmers to ensure the eternal integrity of the deceased young man. However, an insurmountable obstacle remains: the impossibility of extracting the object.

Technological challenges and virtual archaeology

The outer covering of the mummy, the so-called cardboardis in an extremely precarious state of conservation. Attempting to physically open or remove the bandages would mean condemning the find to certain destruction. The challenge for Polish scientists now shifts to the level of “virtual archaeology“: find a way to read the contents of that papyrus without ever unrolling it, using algorithms capable of distinguishing theink from the now mineralized vegetable fibre.

The unknown origins and the future of research

While the mystery of the object remains intact, the causes of death of the child. The bone analysis have not revealed trauma or obvious signs of degenerative diseases, leaving the door open to a thousand conjectures about a premature end that occurred about two millennia ago inUpper Egyptprobably among the cities of Come Ombo e Aswan.
