He should have opened the Salerno Literature Festivalscheduled for June 13-20, but the writer’s name Erri De Luca has disappeared from the program. As anticipated by ‘The Morning’the artistic direction of the event decided to no longer entrust the writer with the opening following the controversy sparked by his statements on Gaza, Israel and Zionism. To explain the reasons in detail toAdnkronos is the artistic director of the event, Gennaro Carillo: “The prolusion, for a festival, is the equivalent of the editorial for a newspaper. Whoever speaks also does so on behalf of those who organize and the artistic direction. And this year the theme has a strong political characterization”.
Speaking at the Salerno Literature Festival “implies a look at the ‘difficult times’ we are experiencing”, says Carillo. Returning to Erri De Luca’s recent statements regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, he underlines: “Precisely because of the esteem we have for De Luca, and despite knowing his positions on the Israeli-Palestinian affair, his statements surprised us greatly. For form and substance. We could have pretended nothing happened, but it wouldn’t have been right. Art can take no position or take very wrong positions. At a festival, however, it is not allowed not to take a position, even if limited to the moment of the opening speech (the speech that officially opens the event, ndr)”.
There is no preclusion to the presence of the writer, explains the artistic director, in another location: a proposal that, however, De Luca would not have accepted. “We would have been happy to host De Luca in another section anyway, to listen to him, learn, and discuss in the most frank way possible”, comments Carillo. The two artistic directors of the event, Gennaro Carillo and Paolo Di Paolo, will open the festival in De Luca’s place.
