An Irish film opens
The Dinard festival also announced on Friday that it would be the Irish comedy Once Upon a Time in a Cinema which would open the festivities. Directed by David Gleeson, screenwriter of the controversial biopicTolkien, this film summons nostalgia for the 80s when “going to the cinema every week, and preferably on a Friday evening was an essential ritual”. Bringing together veterans of the Irish cinema and young up-and-comers,Once Upon a Time In a Cinematakes place during a screening.
The twists and turns that take place off-screen are as revealing as those projected on-screen. Colin Morgan (Long Day’s Journey Into Night, Merlin) plays Earl Clancy, the cinema operator in a small town, who tries to deal with a hellish Friday night caused by a succession of disasters (rats, water damage, etc.), while considering the sale of the establishment to an unsavory politician.
