A protest by Potter fans changed the route of the power line – Dobby’s grave was saved

The Greenlink cable connects the British electricity grid to Ireland over a distance of more than 200 kilometers from County Wexford to the shores of Freshwater West in Pembrokeshire.

The death of the fictional character Dobby was filmed on the beach Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in the movie. The fans have built a stone monument at the site, although caring for the area National Trust organization has asked them not to do so. The beach is classified as an ecologically sensitive area.

Director of cable works Simon Ludlam said on the Energy Revolution podcast that the cable was originally intended to run directly through the memorial site. However, after the interview was published by the BBC, his company Etchea Energy received hundreds of calls from concerned Potter fans.

Ludlam said in the podcast that he was confused at first, because it is a fictional character. Then he was told that it was a serious matter by fan standards. In the end, the electricity cable running from Britain to Ireland, worth a good 500 million euros, was rerouted.

“Many have been very satisfied. Now the project is moving forward, and Dobby is happy,” Ludlam stated.

Ironically the case is that the new cable route passes close to genuine burial remains from the Bronze Age.

According to Pembrokeshire county planning documents, near the cable’s new route, archaeological digs have found a piece of a clay urn dating from around 1700-1500 BCE. Similar urns were typically used when burying people.
