The Cirque du Soleil returns to Madrid with the erection of the big top for its show ‘Luzia’

The Circo del Sol has returned to Madrid, after the break due to the pandemic, with the erection of the large tent located on the Puerta del Ángel Stage that will host the performances of ‘Luzia’, a show inspired by Mexico that will surprise in a way ” different and emotional.

“Today we can officially say that we are in Madrid, it is a milestone. We are really excited about it,” said Cirque du Soleil’s publicist, Charlie Wagner, in statements to Europa Press before raising the tent, a “unique moment” that It took place around 1:00 p.m. this Saturday and after which the installation of the acrobatic team will proceed. Everything has to be prepared for the start of functions on November 5.

Specifically, more than a hundred people have hoisted the more than 100 support posts to raise the canvas to its final position. The large tent, which has a capacity of 2,600 people, consists of a dome located at a height of 19 meters and with a diameter of 51 meters. Four 25-meter-high steel masts support it upright and 500 pilings keep it well anchored to the 20,000 square meters of space needed for the show.

For the complete installation of the infrastructure that ‘Luzia’ requires, the Cirque du Soleil team needs eight days and travels with 65 trailers that transport some 2,000 tons of material.

Among the highlights of the infrastructure, there is a wall of water that will mark the difference of this proposal with respect to others in the circus. Wagner has underlined the difficulty of moving and installing such an element.

“It has been a challenge, but the effort is going to be worth it when we see the reaction of the public when it rains in the tent”, advanced the Cirque du Soleil’s publicist, who has guaranteed a “really different” proposal thanks to the incorporation of the water, which becomes a “character”.

Thus, he has underlined that ‘Luzia’ will dazzle for its high-level acrobatics and visual surprises, but also for its “super emotional” character thanks, precisely, to that element.

The show, which is presented as a “feast for the senses” and an “explosion of light and rain”, has a Mexican theme due to the inspiration that the country caused in the stage director, Daniele Finzi Pasca, during the decade he lived there.

In this sense, Wagner has defined it as a “homage” to Mexico — without clichés — and has not ruled out that in the future the Cirque du Soleil will do the same with Spain. “We can’t say never”, he has said about it.

MADRID WILL “CONNECT” WITH ‘LUZIA’

Likewise, he has extolled the “great relationship” that the circus has with Madrid due to the warm reception of the public every time they arrive with a new show. In addition, he has advanced that with ‘Luzia’, the circus and the capital will reach a “special connection” because it is in Spanish.

About 50 artists are part of this proposal that can be enjoyed in Madrid until January 8, 2023 and that has already visited Barcelona and Alicante this 2022, as well as Switzerland and Spain. This year, the Cirque du Soleil celebrates 24 years of touring in Madrid, with which it has presented thirteen different shows, nearly 1,000 performances that have been enjoyed by more than 2.5 million spectators.
