Will Trent is a suitably whiny detective – Culture

The hero of the new police series, Will Trent, is one of the most hated detectives in Atlanta.

Geniuses but socially constrained crime detectives have been an integral part of detective entertainment since at least the days of Sherlock Holmes.

Author Karin Slaughterin created by the original detective Will Trent is in the new series like a cross between Holmes, the basic detective and the hit series A monk obsessive-compulsive protagonist – with an arrogant and surprisingly entertaining twist.

Dyslexic Trent talks to other policemen, his superiors, and those he is interrogating in a snappy way, and when he arrives at the crime scene, he doesn’t leave his skills unclear. Picking up on the mistakes of his colleagues makes him one of the most hated detectives in Atlanta.

Of course, idealizing arrogance has its risks. The coldness Will Trent – series (2023–) avoids due to the black humor that was appropriately whined in the opening episode.

The affair starts in a macabre bloody way, when the mother of the family, dressed in a minimal white tennis dress, catches her husband cheating within a few minutes and attacks him threateningly with a knife. A body that looks like my own teenage daughter is lying on the floor.

Compared to this, the spirit of the crime series filmed in the state of Georgia, in the sun of Atlanta, is surprisingly positive, thanks also to the main star of the series. Ramon Rodriguez creates a sympathetic character from Trent, whose validity and closedness hides hints of a broken childhood and caring for the less fortunate.

Quick twists and barely found clues are enough, and the series doesn’t even seem to try to aim deeper than the pleasure that comes from solving crimes. That’s enough.

Behind the gently slanted grip is a Scottish director who has made original crime films Paul McGuiganwhich in 2010 also responded Benedict Cumberbatchin The new Sherlock – about the signature style of the series.
