The Reina Victoria Theater withdraws the play 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', by Ramón Paso

He Queen Victoria Theater has withdrawn the work ‘Summer night Dream’ of Ramon Paso from his billboard, after the complaint from the Madrid Provincial Prosecutor’s Office against the playwright for alleged sexual crimes that he would have committed against several women between 2018 and 2023.

The founder of the Pentación group – owner of the Reina Victoria Theater since 2020 -, Jesús Cimarro, has confirmed this decision to Europa Press, also adding that He will not program “any show” in Paso again as a theater entrepreneur until there is a ruling in this court case.

Likewise, Cimarro has clarified that the performances of Paso’s play, usually on Mondays, had not been scheduled by the theater itself, but by another company that paid the rent for the space. Cimarro has also explained that that company was not PasoAzorín, the company founded by Ramón Paso.

‘The dream of a nigth of summer’ is a play based on the text by William Shakespeare which, in this case, was covered and directed by Paso himself, accompanied in the cast by his usual group from the PasoAzorín company – including the three actresses who have sent a statement of support to the playwright: Ana Azorín, Ángela Peirat and Inés Kerzan-.

This decision by Cimarro was taken on the same day that Leaders of the theater sector have shown their support for the women who have denounced the playwright. Thus, the director of the Almagro International Classical Theater Festival, Irene Pardo, has condemned sexual violence and has announced that the event will have protocols to avoid cases of aggression and abuse in this area.

This is what Pardo explained in statements to Europa Press, after being asked about the complaint by the Madrid Provincial Prosecutor’s Office against the playwright Ramón Paso for alleged sexual crimes that he had committed against several women between 2018 and 2023.

“I am a person who is in charge of a festival and in charge of many other people who work on it, and “What we must ensure is that work spaces are safe for everyone and that there is never any abuse of power, much less sexual abuse.”he stated.

SUPPORT OF THE THEATER SECTOR

Precisely, one of the people present at the festival’s presentation event was the actor Pepe Viyuela, who left the play after learning of the complaint and received a standing ovation from the attendees after receiving praise from Pardo. “He is one of the most integrated people in life,” stated the director of the contest when referring to Viyuela, which will also be at the Almagro Festival.

For her part, the general director of the National Institute of Performing Arts and Music (INAEM), Paz Santa Cecilia, has also shown the conclusion of the act is its “most absolute condemnation” of the case of Ramón Paso and “to others who have been coming out, it doesn’t matter whether they are from the world of cinema or the performing arts.”

The general director of INAEM regretted in statements to Europa Press that “it was a matter of time” before these cases of sexual assaults saw the light in the performing arts, since she understands that they occur in all areas of society. However, “within the bad news” that this entails, considers it “good news that he is in the hands of justice.”
