The Government reiterates its defense and protection of intellectual and industrial property rights

The Council of Ministers, at the proposal of the Ministers of Culture, Ernest Urtasun, and of Industry and Tourism, Jordi Hereu has approved an institutional declaration in which it reiterates its commitment to intellectual and industrial property rights, on the occasion of World Intellectual and Industrial Property Day, which is celebrated this Friday, April 26.

Throughout its history, Spain has stood out in the areas of innovation and artistic, literary, scientific, industrial and business creation on countless occasions. Women and men of our country have distinguished themselves for their ability to devise and materialize pictorial, sculptural, photographic, musical, scenic, audiovisual, literary, architectural works and creations, as well as technological, scientific and industrial inventions, which have left their mark on the world,” the Government says in a statement.

In this sense, the Executive recalls that they have created the Spanish Office of Copyright and Related Rights, in addition to taking actions to combat piracy and counterfeiting or the recent approval of the European Regulation on Artificial Intelligence; and promote a new regulatory framework for geographical indications of artisanal and industrial products, updating design regulations or the new European patent legislative package.

Likewise, it considers that these rights contribute positively to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda. The document highlights that the existence of a developed system of intellectual property rights has been a “decisive” element to consolidate the achievements granting the necessary protection to creations.

The Government highlights that consolidated rights contribute “directly” to the recognition of authorship, merit, effort and work, protect and encourage investment and guarantee equitable remuneration. “All of this results in artistic, literary, cultural, technological, scientific and industrial growth, as well as economic progress, well-being and social cohesion of our country,” adds the Executive.

“We can affirm, therefore, that the defense and promotion of intellectual and industrial property rights contributes to building and strengthening a more sustainable and competitive artistic, cultural, technological and business model, which places Spain as a world reference in industries. cultural, technological and innovative, with positive effects for all citizens and for the prosperity and sustainability of our welfare state,” the Government adds.
