The Ministry of Health warns that two cases of corneal lesions believed to be caused by the parasite Microsporidium, which is found in the waters of Lake Kinneret, have been diagnosed over the past week. This parasite can cause inflammation of the eyes and lead to poor vision.
According to available data, both patients swam in the Kinneret in late June – early July.
It is emphasized that drinking water from the Kinneret is safe, and swimming in the lake is not prohibited.
However, anyone who has swam in the Kinneret and subsequently experiences symptoms of eye inflammation – redness, pain or the sensation of a foreign body in the eye – is recommended to consult an ophthalmologist as soon as possible for diagnosis and treatment.
It is noted that symptoms usually appear one to three weeks after contact with water.
