Rat infestation in Bnei Brak: “Several children and toddlers were bitten”
Plague of rats and mice in the city of Bnei Brak. The harmful rodents roam freely in the houses, the kindergartens and the streets. “It doesn’t make sense anymore,” says David Keshet, a resident of the city and director of the “Yediot Bnei Brak” group, who published several videos on social media documenting what is happening in the city, and received dozens of response videos. “People sent me a lot of comments on the subject. Residents told about mice and rats in their home, at work, mice chasing other mice. Someone even sent a video where you see a whole family of mice that he caught inside the house. They climb up and enter the houses freely.”In one of the WhatsApp groups started by Keshet together with city resident and social activist Yankala Friedman, one of the residents mentioned that a huge rat was found in the toilet of her daughter’s garden. “She told us that when the kindergarten teacher called to complain to the municipality, she was told to close the bathroom door and wait until Sunday. It’s a joke. We believe it’s because of poor sanitary conditions, dirt, lack of hygiene, otherwise there is no logical explanation.”

“A quarter of a million residents of Bnei Brak suffer from rats that are multiplying at an alarming rate. I am alerting the city administration and I feel that there is opacity on the issue,” wrote city council member Yaakov Vider in a letter he sent to the Minister of Health. He also stated in his letter that “in recent days, several children and toddlers have been bitten by rats, and an elderly man who was walking on the road even needed medical attention and was hospitalized as a result of being bitten. After consulting with an expert, it seems that the problem does not exist in cities adjacent to Bnei Brak, so there is no doubt that it is related to the sanitation conditions in the city. Bnei Brak is one of the dirtiest and neglected cities in Israel. This is a clear danger to the public that really endangers human life.”

“There are 50 types of bacteria that the rats transmit by biting or touching”

Marina Tamir, a doctor of clinical pharmacology and an infection specialist at Ramat Gan Academic College, claims that mice and rats are found all over the country, but in Bnei Brak there is a particularly high concentration of them. on the verge of collapse. These animals are mainly looking for food and water. They may bite, and thus transmit the severe E. coli bacteria. The rats also transmit parasites and virulent bacteria associated with feces. What is problematic is mainly their contact with food. If they touch the food and it is eaten by humans, they may also transmit salmonella, which usually comes from the feces of the rats, causes bloody diarrhea and damages the stomach.”

Moreover, Dr. Always points out that a rat bite can be particularly dangerous. “It can transmit rabies, E. coli, infectious hepatitis E and typhoid. There are 50 types of bacteria that the rats transmit when they bite or touch. After a rat or mouse bite, a tetanus vaccine must be given within a few minutes, otherwise it may cause paralysis. I suggest to the residents of Bnei Brak and to everyone, in fact, to make sure that he is vaccinated and that the vaccination is valid.”

In addition, she suggests taking precautions that may reduce the phenomenon. “Sewage openings must be closed, piping arranged, water sources removed, holes in the walls and ceiling of houses sealed, avoiding throwing leftover food in the streets and general maintenance of cleanliness and hygiene.”
