Should you bathe a lot to cool off on hot days?

I have a habit of taking a shower as soon as I get home or whenever it’s hot or sweating a lot. Is this good? (Hung, 27 years old, Dong Nai)

Bathing not only cleans the skin but also helps keep pores clear, thereby releasing sebum and sweat on the skin’s surface. Bathing can also help regulate body temperature. However, excessive bathing will affect the skin’s surface microflora, losing beneficial bacteria when using a lot of chemicals or antibacterial soap.

In addition, in some people, these chemicals can affect the surface of the skin, causing changes in skin moisture, irritation, dryness, stretch marks, cracks… From there, the physical barrier is broken and changes occur. Changes in the previous skin surface microflora can be the source of infection foci. In particular, elderly people with weak resistance, people with existing skin diseases, skin damage in Cushing’s syndrome, can easily lead to infection.

At the same time, when the body is in the sun, the ambient temperature is quite high, going home to shower immediately will lead to a sudden change in temperature. At that time, the body’s thermoregulation center must work continuously. Therefore, when you come back from being out in the sun or when you sweat a lot, you should not shower right away but should rest and wait for the sweat to dry for about 30 minutes.

In addition, you should not bathe many times a day to avoid constant body temperature changes, which is not beneficial to your health.

According to research at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, USA, people exposed to temperature changes are more likely to suffer from respiratory diseases. Then the patient will have symptoms such as sneezing, coughing, and sore throat. Especially in the elderly or children, those whose thermoregulatory systems are not sufficiently adaptive.

Sudden temperature changes can also be especially dangerous for people with asthma or allergies. Symptoms may become more severe or trigger a new exacerbation of the disease.
