The most serious victim of a cruise ship collision suffered 'broken organs and severed arms'

TP HCMThe 36-year-old male tour guide suffered multiple injuries, his elbow was severed, after the boat carrying 42 foreign guests collided with a ferry on the Tien River.

On April 20, Dr. Le Dinh Hai, Department of Trauma and Orthopedics, Cho Ray Hospital, said that the patient entered the hospital early in the morning of the same day with a very fast pulse and unmeasurable blood pressure. Doctors from many specialties consulted and determined that the patient suffered from traumatic shock, ruptured organs, and a crushed right elbow. The tour guide also broke bones in many places such as both femurs, right patella, left lower leg, left ankle…

The treatment team resuscitated, intubated and ventilated, and transferred to emergency surgery. The patient’s abdomen had a lot of feces, crushed and perforated the rectum, serosa, and duodenum, which was successively sutured by the gastroenterologist. In addition, the orthopedic trauma team trimmed and shaped the right arm amputation, trimmed the thigh and lower leg, and splinted the broken bone.

“The patient is on a ventilator after surgery and receiving intensive care, but unfortunately the team could not save his arm,” the doctor said.

This is the most serious case of injury when the ferry carrying 42 foreign passengers from Phnom Penh, Cambodia to Chau Doc, the section across the Tien River in Tan Chau town, An Giang, collided with the ferry on the afternoon of April 19. The accident also left German and French tourists (57 and 67 years old) with broken legs and were treated at FV Hospital.

The ship owner said the vehicle was hit while trying to cross the ferry at a section of the Tien River where many barges carrying sand obscured visibility. The company is coordinating with investigative agencies to clarify the cause of the accident. Authorities determined that both the ship’s crew and the ferry driver had no alcohol levels and tested negative for drugs.
