5 foods people with osteoporosis need to limit

Red meat, foods rich in sugar, salt, caffeine, oxalate and phytate increase the risk of calcium loss, making osteoporosis worse.

Osteoporosis is a chronic disease, often occurring in women after menopause and men over the age of 50. The disease can start in young people who smoke, are inactive, and have underweight eating habits. for long periods of time or due to genetics.

Master, Doctor Nguyen Anh Duy Tung, Nutrihome Nutrition Center, said that to control osteoporosis, in addition to taking medication as prescribed by the doctor, patients need a scientific diet. You should increase foods rich in calcium, zinc, and vitamin D. Limit foods that increase the risk of calcium loss, making osteoporosis worse.

Red meat: Beef, pork, sheep, and goat are rich in protein. When the body metabolizes, it produces acid radicals, causing blood pH levels to lower. To neutralize this acid, the body tends to remove calcium from the bones because calcium is a natural alkalizer. This process reduces bone mineral density, causing osteoporosis to progress. People with osteoporosis should not eat more than 70g of red meat per day, not more than 500g per week.

Foods rich in oxalates and phytates: Tomatoes, spinach, eggplant, potatoes, beans and nuts, whole grains… cause the body to limit calcium absorption. When encountering calcium ions in the body, oxalate and phytate have the ability to create chemical reactions, forming calcium oxalate and calcium phytate crystal precipitates, making it difficult for the intestines to absorb calcium.

Foods high in salt: People with osteoporosis should avoid eating salty foods because the high sodium content in salty foods can cause calcium deficiency in the body. As the amount of sodium excreted in urine increases, it also entails a significant amount of calcium. This condition can increase the risk of bone fractures for people with osteoporosis.

Foods high in sugar: Consuming foods high in sugar can increase the amount of calcium excreted in the urine, causing bones to lose calcium and promote the progression of osteoporosis. Foods high in sugar are also rich in calories, and consuming them in large quantities increases the risk of overweight and obesity, puts pressure on bones, and increases the risk of bone damage or joint disease in people with osteoporosis.

Foods rich in caffeine: Cocoa, chocolate, coffee, green tea… can increase the rate of calcium loss through urine, reducing bone mineral density and the amount of calcium in the body. People with osteoporosis who consume too much caffeine can increase the risk of bone fractures, making the disease worse. The maximum daily caffeine intake for people with osteoporosis should be less than 400 mg.

Doctor Duy Tung said people with osteoporosis should exercise regularly and moderately. Do not drink alcohol, do not use stimulants and stay away from cigarette smoke. Regular check-ups and medication as prescribed by a musculoskeletal specialist (if any). Patients should go to a nutritionist so that the doctor can check their body index and advise them on a suitable diet, which can slow down the progression of the disease.

Osteoporosis increases the risk of osteoarthritis, causing pain. Some natural essences such as Eggshell membrane extract (eggshell membrane extract), undenatured Collagen type II and hydrolyzed collagen peptide, Chondroitin sulfate (main component of the extracellular matrix structure), Turmeric root extract (extract Turmeric)… supports pain relief, regenerates joint cartilage, and helps strengthen bones and joints.
