Should we test for 'blood clots' after Covid vaccination?

Recently, people were confused by the news that AstraZeneca admitted that its Covid-19 vaccine could cause blood clots in rare cases. Therefore, many people rush to do a D-Dimer test to find blood clots or buy oral medications to dissolve blood clots, reducing the risk of stroke.

However, the most recent injection was about two years ago and has hardly left any side effects to this day. The Ministry of Health affirms that side effects of the vaccine (if any) only occur within 28 days after use. Vietnam has injected tens of millions of doses of AstraZeneca vaccine but has only recorded a few cases of side effects related to thrombosis after vaccination. The World Health Organization (WHO) said side effects of the vaccine are also very rare. Therefore, people need to be alert to avoid “losing money and suffering”.

In fact, D-Dimer is a specific testing method for people with blood clots in the veins, prescribed by a cardiologist. For example, myocardial ischemia or myocardial infarction, severe chest pain on the left side, sharp pain along the left arm, fatigue with shortness of breath, sweating… In case of normal health, test results D-Dimer will be misleading, easily causing confusion and expense.

In case an abnormality is detected, the doctor will prescribe in-depth testing to determine the location and extent of the clot so that appropriate treatment can be provided. Not all blood clots can be treated with medication. Therefore, people do not arbitrarily use oral medications to dissolve blood clots.

Doctors recommend that whether vaccinated or not, there is a risk of stroke. When noticing health abnormalities, people should go to a reputable medical facility for examination to receive timely diagnosis and treatment.
