Wearing diapers for 32 years due to bladder fistula

The 59-year-old woman had a vesicovaginal fistula that caused her to urinate uncontrollably, had to wear diapers for 32 years, and had just had surgery to close the fistula.

She lived with uncontrolled urine leakage after an obstetric accident in 1992. Urine followed the vesicovaginal fistula out, continuously, causing inconvenience. Recently, the condition became more serious, the patient went to E Hospital (Hanoi), Dr. Nguyen Dinh Lien, Head of the Department of Urology and Andrology Surgery, noted a fistula in the posterior wall of the bladder about one meter in size. cm, about 2 cm from the ureteral opening.

“This is an emergency case, urinary leakage for too long can easily cause infection,” said Dr. Lien. Doctors assessed that the leak was large and urine leaked continuously for a long time, causing the bladder’s contraction function to decrease. The bladder shrinks, has a thick wall, is hardened due to prolonged inflammation, and has a low ability to heal wounds. In addition, the patient had multiple surgeries, leading to fibrous adhesions. Therefore, the doctors decided to surgically close the bladder fistula first, and then sew up the patient’s vaginal fistula.

After surgery, the patient continues to be monitored at the hospital.

Bladder fistula is one of the complications that occurs after cesarean section, hysterectomy, surgery for pelvic area diseases or after prolonged labor. This phenomenon often occurs a few days after giving birth, manifested as leakage of urine or stool through the vagina.

Doctors recommend that when there are signs of abnormalities in the urinary system, patients need to see a doctor soon to receive timely and effective treatment.
