German World Cup opponents Curaçao also lost their second game under former Schalke coach Fred Rutten. The national soccer team from the Caribbean island suffered a 1:5 (0:1) defeat in the test against Australia in Melbourne. Awer Mabil (23rd minute), Alessandro Circati (67th), Jordan Bos (71st) and Nestory Irankunda (80th/84th) scored the goals for the Australians. Curaçao’s Ar’jany Martha scored to make it 1-1 (50′).
Former Schalke player Rutten took over the coaching position from his Dutch compatriot Dick Advocaat in February. The 78-year-old had withdrawn from the position because of his daughter’s illness. In Rutten’s debut, Curaçao lost 2-0 to China last week.
Curacao is the German team’s opening opponent at the World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico on June 14th. The World Cup debutants’ other opponents in Group E are Ecuador (June 20) and Ivory Coast (June 25).
