WC hockey: A shock twist! Coach Patrick Fischer out

Swiss head coach of the men’s national ice hockey team Patrick Fischer has been fired. Tells about it Blick.

Fischer’s ear Jan Cadieux.

The timing of the kicks is dramatic, as Switzerland is hosting the World Cup this spring.

Fischer found himself in the middle of an uproar this week when he said that he had used a fake corona passport at the Beijing Olympics in 2022. Fischer said this in a press release from the Swiss Hockey Association.

The timing of the release was hardly a coincidence, as shortly after the release Blick published a report that not only told about the falsification of the corona passport but also that Fischer had received a conviction for speeding in 2020.

According to Blick, the speeding issue is a serious additional piece of information in Fischer’s case, as the coach assured in the association’s press release that he had always followed the law, except for the corona passport.

“The case has been dealt with in the courtroom, but it has now sparked a strong public debate about values and trust. The association takes the matter very seriously. Trust and operational integrity are central to our sport and to the association”, the vice-president of the Swiss Hockey Association Urs Kessler says according to Blick.

Fischer said in a press release published on Tuesday that he did not want to take the corona vaccine for “personal reasons”, but still wanted to make it to the Olympics four years ago.

“I know I made a serious mistake in this matter. I stand behind my actions and take full responsibility. I have faced the consequences and paid the fine.”

Fischer says in the release that he was sentenced for his act in 2023. The amount of the fine is not disclosed.

According to the release, the Swiss Hockey Federation, the Swiss Olympic Committee, or Fischer’s relatives were not aware of the matter at the time.

Cadieux, 46, previously served as Fischer’s assistant coach. Before that, he coached the main league club Geneve-Servette for a long time and won both the Swiss championship and the CHL with it.
