Serial winners BR Volleys have a surprising change of coach in the middle of the fight for their tenth German championship in a row. “For urgent family reasons, the previous head coach Alexandre Leal is stepping down from his position with immediate effect and Markus Steuerwald is taking over for the remainder of the 2026 playoffs,” the Berliners announced three days before the decisive third semi-final game against VfB Friedrichshafen.
Leal has been with the top German club since 2023, initially as an assistant coach under head coach Joel Banks. After his departure in January, the Brazilian was promoted to head coach. “Alexandre Leal has asked for the opportunity to return to his homeland for personal reasons. This is unfortunate given the explosive sporting situation, but we are of course complying with this wish in his interest,” said managing director Kaweh Niroomand, who thanked Leal for his work.
The capital club announced that the contractual relationship with Leal will continue to exist. The South American could return to the Berlin sidelines. Steuerwald has previously been an assistant coach and will be head coach at Bundesliga rivals Grizzlys Giesen in the coming season.
