Marios Oikonomou, former Bologna and Cagliari player, dies: tragedy in Greece, he was 33 years old

Today, Monday 1 June, the former defender of Cagliari, Bologna, Spal, Bari and Sampdoria, Marios Oikonomou, died at the age of just 33due to the consequences of a road accident that occurred in Giannina, his hometown, on May 24th. The Greek Football Federation made the sad announcement. “The President of the Hellenic Football Federation, Makis Gagatsis, the Executive Secretary Domna Tsioni and the members of the Executive Committee of the Federation express their deep sorrow and sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Marios Oikonomou, who passed away prematurely at the age of just 33.”

“The deceased stood out throughout his football career not only for his presence on the pitch, but also for his ethics, his professionalism and his smile, elements that earned him the appreciation and respect of teammates, coaches and fans. Marios Oikonomu made six appearances for the national team, while at club level he played for important teams in Greece, Italy and Denmark, leaving his mark on Greek and European football. Specifically, in Greece he played for Pas Giannina, Aek Athens and Panaitolikos, while in Serie A he wore the shirts of Cagliari, Bologna, Spal, Bari and Sampdoria. Oikonomou had been in intensive care for a week. According to what was reconstructed by the Greek media, it was a violent collision between his motorbike and a car driven by a 63-year-old man. Rescue was prompt with operators immediately transporting the former footballer to the Hatzikostas hospital for emergency surgery due to serious cranial-encephalic injuries. After a week in intensive care, confirmation arrived that he had passed away at the age of 33.
