Painful failure: Bayern professional Davies misses the start of the World Cup with Canada

Bayern professional Alphonso Davies will not be available to co-host Canada at the start of the World Cup. The defender of the German soccer record champions from Munich has to watch the first preliminary round duel with Bosnia-Herzegovina today (9 p.m./ARD and Magenta TV) in Toronto as a spectator because of a thigh injury that has not yet fully healed. “He is not available,” announced Canada coach Jesse Marsch.

Hope for a later entry into the World Cup

Davies suffered a torn muscle in the Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain in May. The 25-year-old is already doing light training sessions again, but it’s not yet enough for a World Cup appearance. “He’s recovering incredibly well. We’re preparing to increase the load,” said Marsch.

An MRI scan on Wednesday produced positive results, which would raise hopes that Davies would be able to take part in the World Cup at a later date. “We very much hope that we will make progress in the coming days and next week and that he will soon be able to contribute,” Marsch continued. Canada will play its second group game on June 19th against Qatar and will face Switzerland at the end of the preliminary round on June 24th.
