The brother pairs: About world champion brothers and direct opponents on the pitch

Seven pairs of brothers can be seen at the World Cup. Four of them do not play for the same national team.

The KURIER takes a look at the brothers of the present and the past – with two of them achieving the feat of becoming world champions.

Inaki and Nico Williams

First up are Inaki (31) and Nico (23) Williams. At club level both run for Athletic Bilbao On the national team, Inaki is a Ghana player and Nico is a Spain player. The winger is more successful in the dress of “Red Fury“, he won the 2024 European Championship and has a chance of becoming world champion this year.

The 32-year-old Inaki is a 26-time cap for Ghana and a cap for Spain. Nico has 30 appearances.

Both are playing in a World Cup for the first time.

Derrick Luckassen and Brian Brobbey

Derrick Luckassen is the older brother. After 21 international matches for the Netherlands, the 30-year-old decided to wear the “Black Stars” jersey and made his debut for Ghana on March 30th.

Brian Brobbey (24), on the other hand, remains loyal to his country of birth and already has 13 “Bondself” international games to his name.

It is also the first World Cup participation for these two.

Guéla and Désiré Doué

Do the “World Cup debutants hat trick” for the brothers Guela and Désiré Doue full. The former runs for the at the age of 23 Ivory Coast has already played 21 national games. Désiré is two years younger, the Frenchman is allowed to come alongParis Saint-Germain  Champions League winner to name.

Lucas und Theo Hernández

No brother duo in this list has won as many trophies as the Hernández brothers – who both play for France. Lucas (30), the brother who is two years older, is, among other things, the reigning world champion, three-time Champions League winner and four-time Bundesliga champion. There are also 42 national team appearances.

Theo (28) has “only” won the Champions League once, but was also champion in Italy. He has made 45 appearances for the French national team.

John and Harry Souttar

At the age of 29 comes John for his World Cup debut. 24 times Scottish international is therefore later than the one who is two years younger Harry. This plays a role because of the mother’s origins Australiahas already played four times at the World Cup in 2022 and led the “Socceroos” took to the field as captain against Turkey.

To look at the past:

Fritz and Ottmar Walter

At the “Miracle of Bern” In 1954, when Germany held the trophy for the first time, the brothers shot Fritz and Ottmar Four goals in the semi-final against Austria (final score 6:1). In the final against Hungary, Fritz led the DFB team onto the field as captain (61 appearances in total) and scored one goal. Ottmar (21 appearances in total) didn’t score in the final, but was also on the field for the entire 90 minutes.

Kevin Prince and Jerome Boateng

In 2010, the two ex-professionals wrote in South Africa Story. On June 23rd there was a clash between Kevin-Prince (Ghana) and Jerome (Germany) the first brother duel on a World Cup stage. Four years later in Brazil they repeated the feat.

Jérôme became world champion in the final against Argentina and played a total of 76 international matches. Kevin-Prince played 15 international matches but remained without a trophy at national team level.

Kolo and Yaya Toure

The Touré brothers made a name for themselves in the Premier League in the 2010s. Today are Wheel (45) and Yaya (43) Trainer, the latter of which only recently took over as head coach Slavic Bratislava and thus in the eleven of Ex-ÖFB team player Kevin Wimmer has taken over.

Eden and Thorgan Hazard

The Belgians finish Eden as well as Thorgan. Eden took part in three World Championships, managed a total of 126 “Red-Devils“-Appearances even made it to the semi-finals. Thorgan has 47 appearances, but was last on the field in the national uniform at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
